Judah the Maccabi was the movement’s inspiration for its name. The first sports club of Maccabi was founded in Constantinople in 1895, when a group of young Jews were turned down when they asked to join a local sports club. The Constantinople branch of Maccabi was very successful, and the founding of many more branches, throughout Europe, came in its wake.
