The letter was sent by Yehoshua Abarbiya, the representative of the Baron Edmond James de Rothschild, to people from Tel-Aviv, who had sent their blessings to the Baron and his wife in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary.
In the letter, Abarbiya says that the Baron and Baroness wish to thank the people for their greetings.
The letter, from 4.11.1947, was typewritten on the official stationary of the PICA offices in Tel-Aviv and hand-signed by Abarbiya.
Baron Edmond James de Rothschild (1845-1934) was son of the French branch of the Rothschild family, a philanthropist and Zionist, a major supporter of the Jewish settlement in the land of Israel during the First Aliyah. He was known as 'the Famous Philanthropist' and the 'Father of the settlement'. Among the settlements that enjoyed his support were Zichron Ya'akov, Rishon LeTzion, Petach-Tikvah, Mazkeret Batya and Binyamina.
Yehoshua Abarbiya (1878-1934) was born in Turkey, immigrated to Israel, lived in Jaffa and worked as deputy director of the settlements in Judea on behalf of the JCA. After World War I, when the Baron Rothschild founded PICA (Palestine Jewish Colonization Association), he continued his service as director of the association in the south of the country.
David Tidhar wrote of him: "Was one of the finest of the JCA officials. When he came to Israel, he saw himself not as a an appointed messenger of a foreign company, which rules with the power of its money, but as a citizen who is involved in the life of the settlements and is personally interested in seeing the success of the enterprise. In his action on behalf of the association, he first and foremost strived for the success of the settlements and their peasants".
Excellent condition.
Interesting and rare!
