LETTER FROM LITHUANIA TO DR. YOSEF MOHILEVER, THE PRINCIPAL OF THE GYMNASIUM (HIGH SCHOOL) IN JERUSALEM, WHICH CONTAIN A PERSONAL TESTIMONY OF THE RIOTS – RARE
The letter sent from Lithuania to Jerusalem with an exceptional, detailed and moving description of a witness to the riots in the city and his miraculous escape on 1.6.1906.
The sender is Yerucham Fischel Merchavya, the father of Dr. Chen Melech Merchavya, who is mentioned at the beginning of the letter. He was a revisionist and a member of the Etzel. The addressee is Dr. Mohilever, the principal of the gymnasium in Jerusalem, the son of Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever, of the heads of 'Hovevei Zion'.
In this letter, from 29.11.1930, Merchavya tells about the horrors of the pogrom and his actions after it, like gathering books that were thrown in the street. Later, he tells about a branch of 'The Union of Hebrew Lovers' that opened in Bialystok in 1909 and that Mohilever heads it.
