A colorful and elegant announcement in lithographic print from the “United Charity” – one of the first Torah and Chessed (grace and charity) organizations in Jerusalem, to commemorate a yahrzeit (the yearly memorial of one’s passing). Jerusalem. From the beginning of the 20th century.
“The United Charity Talmud Torah Institution” is an institution that brought together the largest Torah and medicine institutions of the time in Jerusalem : Talmud Torah “Etz Hachaim” (established in 1840) and the “Bikkur Cholim” Hospital (established in 1855). These institutions were established by Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1816 – 1909), the Rabbi of Jerusalem, who conceived the idea to unite the “United Charity” and was even the head of the institution. Later on, Rabbi Avraham Yitzckak Hacohen Kook also led the institution, and it was during this period that the selected item before us was printed. The “United Charity” operated for more than 100 years, and continued to operate even after the establishment of the country.

The announcement has colorful illustrations of two holy and historical sites in Israel: The Tomb of Zachariah the Prophet and the Tomb of Rachel the Matriarch. There are also pictures of “Bikkur Cholim” and the impressive future building of “Etz Chaim (the announcements was printed prior to the completion of the building in 1936).

The students of “Etz Chaim” read from the Tehilim (Psalms) in memory of the loved ones of the donors of the United Charity who has passed away, on the day of their yahrzeit. The names were written on the announcement similar to the one before us and on the appropriate days were hung in the Beit Midrash (the school) where they read the Tehilim. The donors were extremely happy that the names of their loved ones were being remembered by the Yeshiva students in this holy and special institution.
