3 proclamations published by the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Rabbi Vvi Pesach Frank and his rabbinical court, including a call for prayers and religious fast (Taanith) for the saving of Jews during the Holocaust and afterwards.
1. “Day of prayers and pleas” – undated proclamation, apparently from 1943, published by Rabbi Frank, where he wrote: “Who cannot be mortified by the horrible news… arriving daily regarding the tragic situation of our brothers, sons of Israel, dying in the lands of the Nazi inferno, and specifically in Poland… most of the Israeli nation lies in the rivers of blood and tears…” The Rabbi also describes the spiritual atmosphere in Jerusalem, where religion has weakened. As such, a “day of general prayer” was scheduled for Thursday, at the eve of the beginning of the month of Adar Aleph.
35 cm.
2 . “Prayer and Awakening” – proclamation from the last days of the Holocaust period, most likely 1945, published by the High Rabbinical Court to all Ashkenazi communities in Jerusalem. It describes in lengthy detail both the situation, and the obligation to pray in these horrible times. “In this crazy and terrible time for our people… the cream of the Israeli nation almost completely destroyed at the hands of the murderous foe and its followers… the few that remain travel from border to border, without finding amnesty… the day when G-D will avenge the spilled blood of his worshippers draws near… as such, we mark Thursday, eve of the new month of Adar Aleph, as a day of prayer and awakening”. The Rabbis declare that on this day, “During Shaharit prayer of Selihot and in the hours before evening they will gather… for a Yom Kippur Katan prayer, and blowing of the Shofar….”
Signed by Rabbi Frank, Rabbi Yosef Gershon Hurvitz, and Rabbi Eliyahu Re’em.
3 . “Our bothers, Sons of Israel” – interesting proclamation by the religious court to all Ashkenazi communities in Jerusalem, from January 1953, several years after the end of the Holocaust. “Terrible and alarming rumors arrive regarding the situation of our brothers, sons of Israel… war refugees in terrible stress… to be killed and lost… in a terrible abuse of body and spirit”. The Rabbis announce a day of prayer, scheduled for January 27 , when “in the afternoon all will gather, including children, in the Talmud Torahs to recite psalms [Tehilim] and for a Yom Kippur Katan prayer”.
Signed by Rabbi Frank, Rabbi Re’em and the t Rabbi Avraham David Rosenthal
Good condition of all 3 proclamations. Slight tears.
