Proclamation by Rabbi Diskin and Rabbi Sonenfeld for King George V

Proclamation by Rabbi Yeruham Diskin, Rabbi Yosef Haim Sonenfeld, rabbis of the Haredi Sect in Jerusalem, and the Ashkenazi community’s city committee, calling for prayers for the wellbeing of King George V, and the first Jewish High Commissioner Herbert Samuel.
In this interesting proclamation, the rabbis wrote: Gratitude for our benefactors is one of the moral obligations that our people have always eagerly fulfilled… we are delighted to thank the British Kingdom… that has been generous with us in acknowledging the right of the people of Israel in the land of our fathers, and the establishment of our home in our sacred land… and to install amongst a High Commissioner from amongst our brothers.”
In light of these developments, the Rabbis request the people pray both prayers that appear in the proclamation, for the wellbeing of King George V and the High Commissioner. The prayer for the king acknowledges the English people’s recognition of the Jewish people’s right over the land of Israel. In the prayer for the high Commissioner it was written: “May G-D be with him to help the Israeli people flourish in the land of Israel and to revive the wilderness of our lands.”
