Miniature Sefer Torah for journeys. Ark, finials, pointer and mantle. Germany, 1794. Museum item
Miniature Sefer Torah on parchment, including two scroll handles (atzei chaim), silver finials (rimonim) and pointer (yad), an elaborate cloth mantle (me'il), which is all placed in an Ark in the shape of a book with an ornate leather cover. Germany, 1794. Museum item.
This miniature Sefer Torah with the Ark and its accompanying holy items were made suitable for travel conditions by means of its miniature size. Despite that, it is very ornately designed so that the readers of the Sefer Torah were given the exalted feeling of being in a magnificent synagogue despite being travelers.
The Ark is designed in the shape of a thick book with a double door, made of a wooden box covered with brown marble leather, with gold-colored embossed illustrations on all sides. The entire length of the spine is decorated and on its upper section the words " Aron Kodesh" are embossed in gold on a red background. In order for the Ark to look exactly like a book, the depth of the Ark (the place of the page cuts) is decorated with a pretty blue pattern as is customary in impressive books.
When one opens the Ark he discovers a breathtaking sight: two wooden doors covered with matching marbled paper, on which is attached blue paper in the shape of the two Luchot HaBrit with a gold-embossed frame and the Ten Commandments and on top of them the shape of a small crown in red and gold. Above the doors is the embossed title: " Torat Chayim V'Ahavat Chesed LP"k" which reveals the date the Ark was made: 1794.
The doors of the Ark are opened with a tiny cloth tab, petichat  haHeichal. The entire Heichal is covered in marbled paper and in it is the Sefer Torah, the finials and the pointer.
The miniature Sefer Torah is complete and written on light-colored parchment by one scribe, possibly of Russian origin, in pleasant Ashkenazi writing.
42 rows. The width of the parchment is 103 mm. The width of the writing is 74 mm. The ink is black with no signs of fading. The writing has been repaired in a few places, most likely by the original scribe. The kashrut of the Sefer Torah has not been checked; however it is in very fine condition.
In addition, the Sefer Torah has the original cloth protection bound at its beginning, as well as the original cloth belt, which is green and has laces in order to tie the Sefer Torah after reading from it. Original scroll handles made of wood with silver handles. 4 small silver disks support the Sefer Torah from above and below, 2 fixed and 2 mobile.
The Sefer Torah has an elegant mantle of green cloth, hand-embroidered with double lining. Gentle embroidery of decorations in gold and silver thread with the words " Keter Torah" on a red background and the shape of a beautiful crown. On the edges and the bottom of the mantle is a pretty finish in silver and gold thread. The height of the mantle is 21 cm. Its width is 13.5 cm.
The finials are made of silver in the shape of towers with two levels, in German style. On the upper level are five rounded gates with a bell in each gate and above them a bell inside opened petals, with a decorated protruding ending (2 bells are missing). The height of the finials is 14 cm.
The pointer is made of stamped silver. Five smooth corners with a round ending. A silver chain is attached to this miniature pointer by a ring on the lower third of the pointer, so that when the Sefer Torah is taken out of the Ark, the pointer will not disturb and extend past the bottom of the Sefer Torah. (In typical Sifrei Torah the chain is attached to the end of the pointer.) The length of the pointer is 16 cm. At the bottom of the pointer is a tiny hole. It is possible that originally a magnifying glass was attached there for the reading.
It is extremely rare to see a miniature Sefer Torah which is over 200 years old with all of its parts, complete and in this condition.
According to family tradition this Sefer Torah was ordered by a family of Jewish merchants from Germany at the end of the 18th century, and served them when they traveled on business. The Sefer Torah was passed down as an inheritance from father to son, and at the beginning of the 20th century the Sefer Torah was in the possession of the father of the family, who served as the guard of the Jewish cemetery of the Amsterdam community. The cemetery, established in the 17th century, was situated approximately fifteen kilometers from Amsterdam next to the village of Muiderberg. He continued to use the Sefer Torah there, where he was isolated from Jewish communal life.
On the eve of the Nazi invasion of Holland the father of the family hid the Sefer Torah together with the Ark and the rest of the holy items in the cemetery. Unfortunately, the father of the family did not survive the war and was murdered in Auschwitz. However, the mother was miraculously saved, returned to Holland and met her three children. After she found the hiding place in the cemetery where the Sefer Torah and the other holy items had been hidden, she immigrated to Israel.
Prior to her immigration to Israel, the Jewish community of Rotterdam celebrated Simchat Torah with the Sefer Torah.
This unique museum item reveals the self-sacrifice of our nation throughout the years of exile,  for all holy matters.
Enclosed is a letter from the family which describes the history of this rare Sefer Torah, according to the family tradition.
