Rabbinische Gutachten. Important Rabbinic polemic opposing the Reformers. Vienna, 1872.
Rabbinic polemic, a benchmark in the Orthodox war against the reform changes in Austria by Rabbi Zalman Spitzer. Vienna, 1872.
43 pages. German. A list of 389 rabbis who opposed the Reform.
Rabbi Zalman Spitzer (1826-1893) was a prominent Jewish leader. He was a son-in-law of the Chatam Sofer and studied by his son, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin, and the Maharam Schick. In 1871, a polemic started with the community leaders who supported the Reformers and were backed by the government. They wanted to change the prayerbooks and remove all mention of Zion and the future redemption. Rabbi Spitzer organized a counter-meeting in which over 500 people participated - a quarter of the Vienna community. This booklet (from 1872) includes the speech that Rabbi Spitzer delivered at this meeting. The second section features a list of 389 rabbis who supported his position includng the Ketav Sofer, Maharam Schick and the Divrei Chaim of Sanz.Due to its significance, this booklet has been digitized by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. 23 cm.
