Cheque signed by Ze'ev Jabotinsky from April 5 1929 on behalf of the "Yehuda" Company, a Company for Responsibility and Insurance LTD
The cheque was written to the order of Nachum Rappaport of Haifa and bears the stamp of "Bank Halva'a Ve'Chisachon' in Haifa.
Items signed by Jabotinsky while he was working for the "Yehuda" Insurance Company are most rare.
During the years 1928-1929, Jabotinsky served as the vice president and treasurer of "Yehuda", the first insurance company in the Land of Israel, which was founded in 1922. He signed a two-year contract with the company for a salary of a month. The contract enabled him to receive a visa to Israel and also continue his work as a journalist, writer and public activist.
In addition to the practical side of his work for the insurance company, there was also an ideological one. Jabotinsky believed that Israeli insurance company should be founded so that Jewish capital invested in the premium money will lead to development of the country and its building.
In those days, the position of an insurance agent was not considered worthy as manual labor. However, Jabotinsky claimed that "labor" means any effort of the body or mind whose aim is to make a living. Any such laborer is equal to the pioneers.
Within the framework of his work for the insurance company, he prepared a seven-page booklet in French about the importance of life insurance, signed policies and receipts. He was forced to retire from his work for the insurance company after the British government did not let him return to Israel in 1930 after a lecture tour in South Africa.
