Nimukei Ridba"z. Chicago, 1904. Preface with Historic Importance

Novellae on the weekly Torah portions by Rabbi Ya'akov Vilovsky, Av Beit Din of Slutzk and Safed. With historic preface about the history of Jews in America.

The author was one of the geonim of his generation, known for his commentary on the Jerusalem Talmud. He was a rabbi of several communities in Eastern Europe, lastly, Slutzk. He moved to the United States with the goal of strengthening Judaism there, and was rabbi of Chicago. However, after a short period, when he saw that he was unable to make the American desert bloom, and that he had many rivals who prevented him from establishing a kashrut system, he left America. He ascended to the Land of Israel and settled in Safed, where he taught disciples.

The book before us was printed during his stay in Chicago. In the introduction, he writes at length about the state of religion in the United States, especially about Shabbat and Kashrut.

Uncommon book. The title page bears the signature of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Ferber of London.
