Novellae by the Ktav Sofer in his Disciple's Script. Pressburg, 1853-1859

Novellae by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, Av Beit Din of Pressburg, author of Ktav Sofer - lessons he taught at the senior yeshivah in Pressburg, written in the hand of one of his disciples.

Among the titles written at the beginning of the novellae: סוגיא דסימנין ... that I studied here during the summer semester in Pressburg. סוגיא דשטרי פסיקתא ... that we studied at the beginning of the winter of 1853 in Pressburg. On איסורי הנאה that we studied until Shabbat HaGadol 1859 in Pressburg.

Examination of the novellae reveals that most of them were copied from his teacher's manuscripts or heard in his lessons. Some of this material has certainly been printed, but closer examination is necessary to determine whether all of it is indeed by the author of Ktav Sofer and whether all of it has been printed.

Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer - the 'Ktav Sofer' [1815-1872] was a crown prince of Ashkenazic Jewry, a son of the leader of the generation, the gaon the Chata"m Sofer, and the latter's successor as rabbi of Pressburg and its rosh yeshivah. He was also a grandson of the rabbinic leader of the generation, Rabbi Akiva Eiger. Like his father, he was considered the rabbinic leader of his generation, and the leader of Orthodox Jewry. The yeshivah in Pressburg flourished during his time, doubling the number of its students.
