Letter of Torah Responsum from Rabbi Elyashiv to Rabbi Chaim Kreiswirth, Rabbi of Antwerp
Long handwritten, signed letter by R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. [Jerusalem], Nissan, 1961.
The letter is written to his friend R. Chaim Kreiswirth, rabbi of Antwerp, after the latter had gifted him with the newly-edited version of "Responsa Rabbenu Chaim Cohen" (by R. Kreiswirth's ancestor, R. Chaim Hacohen Rappaport, rabbi of Lviv). In his letter, R. Elyashiv thanks R. Kreiswirth for the gift and adds comments to the sections regarding the laws of Korban Pesach (the Paschal lamb) and the proper time for the removal of chametz (leaven). The letter closes with blessings for the upcoming Passover holiday: "I am signing with blessings for a happy and kosher Passover, and may we merit to reach other holidays rejoicing in G-d's service in the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem …".
R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012) was a leading halachic decisor for more than 70 years, known for his exceptional diligence and deep and thorough knowledge of all facets of Torah, enabling him to rule clearly on every matter. During the last 20 years of his life, he led Torah Jewry in Israel and abroad. However, even during his earlier years he was involved in the rabbinic and halachic matters of various communities. R. Elyashiv's students printed his Torah novellae in a series of books of his "comments" on Talmudic tractates that were garnered from his lectures. They also printed a sampling of hundreds of his thousands of responsa in the five volume "Kovetz Teshuvot". The above responsum is printed in Sefer Kovetz Teshuvot, IV, section 47.
The recipient of the letter, R. Chaim Kreiswirth (1918-2002), known as a brilliant Torah scholar, was a student of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin and a son-in-law of R. Avraham Grodzinski, mashgiach of Yeshivat Slabodka. He officiated as rabbi of the Orthodox Jewish community in Antwerp ("Kehillat Machzikei Hadas") and was known as one of the great Torah leaders of the previous generation. His tremendous Torah scholarship was equaled by his kindness and generosity, and he became known as the father of orphans and widows, as well as being deeply involved in financing marriages for the poor. His long friendship with R. Elyashiv dated to the years when they would learn together in Beit Medrash Ohel Sara, (ca. 1940-1950, when R. Kreiswirth lived in Jerusalem before accepting the position of rabbi of Antwerp upon the advice of the Chazon Ish).
