Three Crescent-Shaped Fibulae – "Hillal" – Tunisia
Three silver crescent-shaped "Hillal" ("moon") fibulae, worn in Tunisia and Libya. Tunisia, [first half of 20th century].
Silver, cast, punched, and engraved.
1-2. Pair of large, crescent-shaped fibulae. On one side, delicately decorated with vegetal patterns; with star-and-crescent symbol (crescent created from pair of fish); with birds; and with Star of David. On other side, vegetal patterns, pair of fish, and star enclosed within circle. Approx. 18X16 cm.
3. Single crescent-shaped fibula. Decorated on both sides with vegetal patterns, fish, birds, Star of David, and star. Bears Arabic mark of Jewish silversmith, "Moshe Mazuz." A similar fibula, produced by the same silversmith, can be found in the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (item no. 55.111.45; please refer also to item no. 96). 16X15 cm.
