Collection of Silver Jewelry – Head Ornaments, Bracelet and Anklets – Tunisia and Libya – Jewish Makers' Marks
Six pieces of jewelry. Tunisia and Libya, [first half of 20th century].
1-3. Three "Saafa" head or hair ornaments. Silver (marked). Djerba, Tunisia, and Libya. All three – intended to be suspended from head ornament – feature engraved images of fish and geometric shapes. Two of them bear Arabic mark of Jewish silversmith, "Moshe Mazuz" (please refer also to item no. 99); the third bears the initials "DM" alongside hamsa and fish (mark of Jewish silversmith David Madar). 7.5X1.5 cm.
4. Silver bracelet (unmarked). [Tunisia]. Featuring fish, bird, star-and-crescent, and hamsa decorations. 6X2 cm.
5-6. Pair of very large pieces of jewelry, probably anklets. Silver (marked). Djerba, Tunisia. Featuring vegetal patterns, birds, stars, and star-and-crescent symbol. Bear the initials "JC" alongside image of palm tree (mark of Jewish silversmith Jacob Cohen). 9X4.5 cm.
