Silver Anklets – Tunisia – Bird, Hamsa, and Fish Decorations
Four large women's "kholkhal farag" anklets. Tunisia, [20th century].
Silver, repoussé and engraved.
Large, hollow ring-shaped anklets. Each fitted with rectangular chest-like ornament. According to the Israel Museum's website, an anklet such as this would be filled with pebbles, so that the wearer's footsteps could be heard from a distance. The "G2G Generation to Generation" program website of Tel Aviv's Museum of the Jewish Diaspora states that anklets of this kind would be worn by women during niddah.
