Large, Printed Cloth (Tablecloth): "Ha'Pluga Ha'Ezrachit" (Civil Company) with Jewish Figures- Austria, the End of the 19th century-Beginning of 20th Century - Unusual
A spectacular picture of the Civil Company. These companies (military units), consisting of adults, served as reserve companies and were sent to help in times of war during need. Images of volunteer fighters in their civilian clothing, all of them seniors, among them Jewish figures (stereotypically represented), all of them volunteering together to protect the nation. The company is seen bearing a flag with the company symbol. Guiding the company from the back, are two horsemen on horseback, in uniform, that appear to be the company Commanders together with the person at the head of the company. A military band can also be seen in the picture carrying musical instruments. In the distance, women and children that have remained at home can be seen.
In the upper corner is the symbol of the civilian company and in the lower corner the name of the country is noted: Austria.
The picture is framed in blue and white stripes.
At the bottom it is inscribed in German: Printed by Berger and Druk, Patent Reserved.
The printed cloth is from the Emancipation Era, when civil rights were given to the Jews and they were drafted in to the Austro-Hungarian Army. On the other hand, Jews are drawn with long noses, faces, clothing and hats that are classic stereotyping of Jews. Maybe in this lies the paradox of equal rights of those times that turned only a few years later into ‘the final solution’ in that same country and culture.
