DOLGORUKOVA CATHERINE: (1847-1922) Mistress of Tsar Emperor II of Russia. Catherine and Alexander II had three children before they formed a morganatic marriage after the death of Empress Marie of Hesse. A lengthy A.L by Dolgorukova, six pages, 8vo, Weilbach, 8th June 1869, to the Emperor Alexander II, in French, with few sentences in Cyrillic. A very intimate letter, divided in two parts, the first two pages written at 11h30 in the morning and the last four on separate pages written at 2h. Dolgorukova states in part `It is stronger than me, I cannot control my crazy feelings, what I feel when I fly towards you.. Nothing in this world can be compared to the happiness of idolizing each other.. it is our pride and which makes us being a lucky exception in all senses. I can imagine your astonishment when receiving my telegram announcing my departure, with the fear and joy of my heart.. I love you and am happy to adore you… I love you my adored angel´, further on, to the second part of the letter, Dolgorukova adds in part `I have received at noon your adorable letter with your kind words which relieve me and fill my day with sun. I devoured it, you know what these letters mean for each other..´ further again saying `I have been thinking as much as you in all minor details lived together these days of happiness in Paris, which seemed to us like a dream we dared expect, and now that we are more sad and depressed and feeling the weight of our separation, we cannot prevent our sigh after such a happiness which God gave us as an award for the six months of torments.. I understand very well that each corner of your rooms remind you the good moments shared together. Alas! Moments which passed to quickly, like a dream.. Please forgive my thoughtlessness when I forgot to add to the telegram the name of Danenberg as recipient, I don´t know how I could forget, I was so anxious..´ A letter of interesting content. VG £600-900 Dolgorukova refers to her oversight not adding the recipient´s name on the telegram, ''Danenberg'' which was the nickname used by Alexander II to send and receive telegrams to and from his mistress Catherine Dolgorukova.
