BETANCES RAMON: (1827-1898) Puerto Rican Nationalist, Writer and medical Surgeon. Considered the father of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Also known as ''The Father of the Poor''. Rare and very interesting A.L.S., `Betances´, twice, the second beneath a post-scriptum with his initials, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 9th October 1896, to Tomas Estrada Palma, future first President of Cuba, on his printed stationery, with a large printed coat of arms to the heading, in Spanish. Betances refers to a diplomatic agreement which was being negotiated by Spanish envoys regarding the independence of Cuba. Betances states in part `..It is a matter of self-esteem for Spain, they would like to keep their flag alongside the Cuban one
All the Spanish forces would leave Cuba, and Cuba would have to continue paying a tribute as a proof of the Spanish sovereignty.´ further expressing his thoughts `I think that in one, two or three years, Spain will settle a rectification of the treaty, retrieving the flag and replacing the tribute by a compensation.
