A VERY LARGE 1812 'DESCRIPTION DE L'EGYPTE' NAPOLEONIC ENGRAVING, KUFIC INSCRIPTIONS FROM MOSQUE OF IBN TULUN
Plate e from Volume II of 'Description de L'Egypte', showing Kufic inscriptions found on the 9th century Mosque of Ibn Talun, the oldest well-preserved Mosque in Egypt, located in the capital, Cairo. The artists' names can be found at the lower corners of the piece. The goat-head sphinx and obelisk watermark of the Institut d'Egypte can be found at the top right.
Description de L'Egypte was a series of publications from 1809 to 1829 detailing the findings of the team of scholars and scientists known as the 'savants' who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his expedition through Egypt from 1798-1801. The publications were put together by the chief editor Edme-François Jomard (1777-1862), an accomplished archaeologist and cartographer.
