A 1755 ENGRAVING, F. L. NORDEN'S VOYAGE D'EGYPTE ET DE NUBIE, VIEW OF NEZLET ABONOUR AND THE VILLAGE OF BEBE

A fine copperplate engraving entitled 'Vue et Perspective de Nezlet Abonour et du Village de Bebe' from the important early Egyptological work 'Voyage d'Egypte et de Nubie' by Frederic Louis Norden. The engravings for this work, of which this is plate LXXII (72), were created by Carl Marcus Tuscher, a prolific German-born engraver who was invited to Denmark by King Christian VI.

Frederic Louis Norden, a Danish naval captain, cartographer, and archaeological explorer, was tasked by King Christian VI of Denmark to establish a trade agreement with the Ethiopian Empire during the reign of Emperor Iyasu II. Along the way he traveled the lengths of Egypt and Sudan, primarily along the Nile, recording information about both the current inhabitants and the ancient ruins, of Egypt and Nubia. His famous depiction of the sphinx, from the same book as the above lot, is the very first to show it without its nose.

Copenhagen, Denmark, 1755.
