AN ILLUMINATED FARSI POEM, NUSHIRVAN A PINCH OF SALT, SAADI SHIRAZI (1209-1292), THE MANNER OF KINGS, FRAMED
A framed and illuminated page containing a poem by Saadi Shirazi (1209-1292) about Nushirvan (Khosrow I of Sassanian Persia) from the collection of stories known as 'The Manner of Kings'.
In the poem Nushirvan and his entourage are out hunting when they decide to prepare some game but realize they are out of salt. They decide to send a servant to a nearby village to retrieve some salt, but Nushirvan tells him not to take it, nor to haggle, but rather to pay full price to the villagers for their salt so that it does not become a custom to take from them. When asked what harm could arise from such a small amount of salt Nushirvan says "The foundation of oppression was small in the world but whoever came augmented it so that it reached its present magnitude. If the king eats one apple from the garden of a subject his slaves will pull him up the tree from the roots. For five eggs which the sultan allows to be taken by force the people belonging to his army will put a thousand fowls on the spit. A tyrant does not remain in the world but the curse on him abides forever."
Saadi Shirazi was one of the greatest poets in world history, influencing many of the most well-known writers and thinkers across the world including Alexander Pushkin, Voltaire, Jean de La Fontaine, and Benjamin Franklin, among many others. Saadi remains a national icon of Persia into the modern day.
