Rare WWII public announcement broadside, 11 x 17 inches, issued by the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration, Presidio of San Francisco, California. About 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in the western interior of the country. Approximately two-thirds of the internees were United States citizens. These actions were ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. 1) Evacuation notice for certain areas in northern and central California with instructions, dated July 22, 1942, 'Instructions to All Persons of Japanese Ancestry...Pursuant to...Civilian Exclusion Order No. 106...all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, will be evacuated from the above area by 12 o'clock noon, P.W.T., Tuesday, August 11, 1942....' signed in print J.L. DeWitt, Lt. General, US Army. Poster is encapsulated in cardboard and acetate with masking tape. Not examined outside of encapsulation. According to consignor the posters is not permanently mounted to cardboard backing.
